A true friend

While out in Boston we met a lady named Ellen. Little did we know what affect she would have on our lives, because really anyone that knows Ellen is blessed to know her. I decided that before we left Boston I wanted to capture her in her home because one: her house was seriously incredible- every piece has a story of how she got it or where it came from. Two: I wanted to remember her and the feeling I got being around her and her home; her goodness and charity, her love and her life.

Ellens Home

Ellen is a friend that I hope that everyone in the world could have. She was the first person to come to our home, bringing a gift  and a warm spirit. Everyday since that first meeting she was the most supportive, thoughtful and loyal friend we could have asked for.  She supported us by kindly asking to babysit so we could go out together or get things done. She sent emails and letter daily (and still does to this day) she even supports me down to this silly blog. And makes me feel cool enough to  pin my pictures, comment and promote it. Which is so little, but mean so much.

Ellen was known for her letter writing. Honestly, when is the last time you received a hand written letter in the mail? She would send one to say thanks for coming to dinner, or congrats on your baby bump, sorry you had a hard day or anything that was significant that happened in our life.

I wish I could go on and on about Ellen, her sense of knowledge, exploration, style, selflessness, her love for life and how relatable she was to anyone. But in short I will say, I am grateful for Ellen and I am grateful that our paths crossed so I could learn so much from her.

The pictures below you will see that she was an artist at collecting antiques! She had a true skill and beautiful sense of style.

Wow. Truly a beautiful tribute - especially to someone still living!! Ellen is indeed a very special, wonderful woman. Am proud to have known her since she was just a young thing in college. She went with me to China when I adopted baby #2 and made friends with everyone on the trip. The other parents, the guides, everyone. Perfect person to go on such an important journey. And I must mention that she took over 35 rolls of 35mm film. - Jennifer

Ellen, I love it all...especially that you value the old. So many people have new everything, but this speaks to where you came from and from whom you came. So many things to ponder when you look around your home.

Wow, Shelby! I don't know you, but I love you. And I love the many pictures of Ellen in her condo. Ellen was the first person to come to our house in Van Nuys, CA, too. It was 1984. She brought a pie that she had made. Little did I know I was meeting the person who would be my lifelong friend, my fellow shopper, my inspiration, by joking buddy, my example. When we both lived in California we were very much a part of each others' lives. She was so important to my family. So much fun for Danny and the first person to see Stefanie after she was born. My kids just LOVED Ellen. We all did.

Ellen is truly amazing in every way (and I mean that literally). She is the most caring, compassionate, active, thoughtful, organized, loving, hilarious, inspirational, committed person I know. Over the years I've known her we have mostly lived far away from each other. But I ALWAY know Ellen is there for me, she's my friend, we are still connected. No one has more friends than Ellen... and I mean FRIENDS who LOVE her.

I love Ellen. I love her sense of humor. I love her sense of style. I love the condo that she has so lovingly decorated. I feel like people who don't know Ellen are really missing out. And, in my opinion, everyone does NOT have an Ellen in their lives. She is one-of-a-kind and the best sort of person and friend. Love, Debbie
